EAR SURGERY

If you or one of your children are uncomfortable with the shape and/or size of your ears, you are not alone. Even a slight distortion in your ears can lead to self-consciousness, and possible teasing from others.

Otoplasty, more commonly known as ear pinning, is a relatively minor surgical procedure that helps minimize the appearance of protruding or oversized ears without having an adverse effect on hearing.

How is Ear Surgery (otoplasty) done?

Otoplasty involves altering the external part of the ear by removing the necessary amount of skin and by plicating the ear’s cartilage to achieve the desired results. Otoplasty can also be performed to bring protruding ears closer to the head in cases commonly known as “Bat ears”. Incisions are made in the natural crease where the ear meets the head resulting in no visible scars.

Is Otoplasty Right for Me?

Otoplasty is most commonly performed on children; however, it can be very beneficial to people of all ages after their ears have reached full size, usually around four to five years of age. When it comes to Otoplasty, the conventional wisdom is the earlier the better, to avoid prolonged intimidation.

Otoplasty is performed to improve or eliminate the following conditions:

  • Large ears
  • Protruding ears  (Bat ears)
  • Lop ear (top of the ear folds downward or inward)
  • Cupped ear (small ear)
  • Shell ear (no outer curve in the cartilage)
